Base Farm, Kolahalamedu, Idukki, Kerala

Base Farm, Kolahalamedu is located in Kottayam-Idukki border of Kerala. It is situated 1,100 metres above sea level and has a cool climate with the temperature between 10 and 23 °C. Kolahalamedu is situated very near to Vagamon which is listed by National Geographic Traveler on their directory among the 50 most attractive places to visit in India. The campus of Base farm of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Kolahalamedu is beautiful with plenty of natural green meadows.

Mandate of the station

• Provide farm training to BVSc&AH, B Tech (Dairy) and Diploma students of the University.
• Conduct training programs for farm assistants, self-help groups, women and farmers.
• Produce hygienic quality milk from crossbred cattle.
• Produce quality fodder and planting materials.
• Provide research facilities in dairy cattle production for students and faculty.
• Bio-energy conservation and bio-waste management with value addition of bio-waste.
• To act as a family farming and self-learning cum home stay center for inculcating the interest in livestock and poultry farming in general public.
• Conservation and improvement of native livestock and poultry breeds adaptable to the region.
• Cater technical and resource input for sustainable organic farming and water conservation system.
• To act as a regional center for the transfer of technology to farmers.

Services

• Advisory service to students, farmers and entrepreneurs in dairy farming
• Awareness created among the public about need of conservation of native Indian cattle (Vechur, Gir, Sahiwal, Kankrej, Ongole, Kangayam) by establishment of heritage farm museum.
• Centre for manufacturing of value added farm products

Trainings

• The station is equipped to provide experiential learning facility to progressive farmers, entrepreneurs and professionals in various aspects of dairy farming including value addition of farm products
• A training programme in dairy cattle production and management to entrepreneurs  organized in  May 2016 (3 trainees attended)
• Certificate proramme on “Dairy cattle production and management”

Sales

• Sale of milk, animals, dung and fodder slips
• Manufacturing and sale of HERiTAGE Milksip

Other Services

• Accommodation facility for farmers, entrepreneurs and tourists visiting the campus
• Animal theme park  to inculcate interest in livestock farming to the public
