Livestock Research Station, Thiruvazhamkunnu, Palakkad

Livestock Research Station, Thiruvazhamkunnu (LRST), Palakkad, Kerala is one of the most prestigious research and veterinary institutes in the state under the auspices of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Started as a Cattle Farm in 08-04-1950 it synchronizes an ideal balance between humans, livestock and Mother Nature and falls in the buffer region of Silent Valley Forest Division.

Following the research collaboration of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University with Worldwide University Network (WUN), Livestock Research Station has been identified as one of three platforms for the research on future farms and sustainable and healthy ruminant production. It is not only the one-of-a-kind institution in the whole country but also in the whole of Asia. 

LRS has a vivid variety of livestock resources and are proud to host among cross bred cattle, Murrah Buffaloes, Vechur Cattle and Attapadi Black goats etc in its campus.

The main Objectives of LRST are:

• To Impart training to Veterinary, Dairy & V.H.S.C students and Veterinarians and Livestock inspectors of AHD
• Undertake researches to find panacea to problems encountered in breeding, feeding and management of domestic animals
• To develop sustainable cross bred cattle that could best accustom to Kerala climatic conditions
• To conserve native breeds of livestock
• To provide continuous  supply of milk to consumers
• To undertake extension and technology transfer initiatives in animal husbandry sector
• To establish demonstration units of various domestic animals
• To undertake research projects in fodder production and conservation
• To conserve the natural forest blanket of campus and to undertake studies on ecology, nature and forestry
• To distribute seeds of good quality fodder and livestock to farmers

Services
The station has a good array of scientific community who will provide the following services

• On call and emergency veterinary consultation to farming community
• Expert advice in starting entrepreneurships based on dairy farming, goat rearing and fodder cultivation
• Conservation of indigenous cattle and goat breeds
• Laboratory based consultation in breeding and disease diagnosis
• Conducting need based researches for farmers in cattle, buffalo and goat considering the climatic conditions of Palakkad district
• Providing Farm tourism to students and farmers

Trainings

Every year LRST is conducting need based training programmes for stakeholders of animal husbandry sector. It includes:

• Training on reproductive management of cattle to farmers & extension functionaries
• Training on Nutritional management of cattle to farmers & extension functionaries
• Training on Hoof care management
• Internship training to veterinary and dairy technology students.
• On Job Training to students of Dairy diploma and V.H.S.C.
• Hands on training to veterinarians of AHD.
